Why is the California DMO Different?
Responsibilities of the California District Office
The California District Office is solely responsible for regulating the Bituminous Mine Subsidence and Land Conservation Act which addresses active underground coal mining in Pennsylvania's bituminous coal fields. California is the only district office that permits bituminous coal refuse disposal sites and coal preparation plants. California administers the Mine Subsidence Insurance program for the entire Commonwealth through the California District Office (Bituminous Coal Region) and in the Wilkes-Barre Field Office (Anthracite Coal Region).
California maintains the largest underground mine map repository in Pennsylvania with mapping of over 2000 mines. Anyone in the Bituminous Coal Region of Pennsylvania that wishes to receive information on possible mining beneath their property is welcome to send a location map of their site to the office and have the site researched. A "
Coal Status Report" will then be sent to the person requesting the information. Appointments can also be made to come into the office and review the information in person. All appointments are scheduled on Tuesday from 9:00 to 11:00 AM and 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Coal Status Reports and public appointments are free to the public. To schedule an appointment, call our office at (800) 922-1678 or (724) 769-1100. Our receptionist would be happy to assist you.
